Interactive Map of Bulgaria’s Cultural Heritage — A Digital Tool for Exploration and Preservation

Full screen

The page you are viewing — the interactive map of Bulgaria’s cultural and historical heritage on bgheritage.bg — is part of an initiative by the Bulgarian Archaeological Association “Ivan Venedikov” aimed at collecting, visualizing, and promoting information about historical and cultural sites across Bulgaria.

The map functions as a geographic visualization tool that displays the locations of numerous significant archaeological, historical, and cultural sites throughout the country. It allows users to explore heritage sites spatially, understand their distribution by region, and gain an overall view of the richness of Bulgaria’s past. By making this information publicly accessible, the platform contributes to broader efforts for open access to cultural heritage data.

Key Benefits of the Interactive Map

1. Easy Access to Spatial Heritage Information

The map organizes cultural heritage data geographically, making it easy for users to see exactly where archaeological sites, ancient settlements, fortresses, Roman remains, medieval churches, and other landmarks are located.

2. High Educational Value

For students, educators, researchers, and history enthusiasts, the map serves as an interactive learning resource. Connecting historical objects to their real geographic locations enhances understanding and makes learning more engaging and visual.

3. Support for Tourism and Trip Planning

Travelers and cultural tourists can use the map to plan routes, discover lesser-known heritage sites, and combine travel with learning about Bulgaria’s history and culture beyond mainstream tourist destinations.

4. Increased Public Awareness and Engagement

The initiative encourages public participation by providing open access to heritage information. By making these data visible and understandable, the map helps raise awareness of cultural preservation and stimulates civic involvement.

5. Value for Research and Community Projects

The platform can serve as a foundational resource for researchers, NGOs, and institutions working in the fields of cultural heritage preservation, academic research, and sustainable cultural tourism development.

Who Can Benefit from This Map?

  • Students of history, archaeology, and geography
  • Researchers and heritage enthusiasts
  • Travelers and cultural tourists
  • Cultural institutions and NGOs
  • Community initiatives focused on heritage protection

How to Navigate and Use the Interactive Map Interface

The interface of the interactive map on bgheritage.bg is designed to be intuitive and accessible, even for users without technical expertise.

Basic Navigation

  • Moving around the map – click and hold the left mouse button (or drag with a finger on touch devices).
  • Zooming in and out – use the mouse wheel or the “+” and “–” buttons on the map to switch from a national overview to a specific region or site.

Interacting with Heritage Sites

  • Each cultural or historical site is marked with a symbol or marker.
  • Clicking on a marker opens an information window containing basic details such as the site’s name, type, and location (and in some cases additional information).

Spatial Exploration

  • The map uses a familiar cartographic layout similar to widely used online maps, making it easy to orient yourself.
  • By zooming in on a region, users can see the density and variety of heritage sites, which is especially useful for analysis or travel planning.

Accessibility Across Devices

  • The map is browser-based and can be accessed on desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones.
  • This makes it suitable both for advance research and for on-site reference while traveling.

Practical Value of the Interface

Thanks to its clean and user-friendly design, the interface allows users to:

  • access information quickly,
  • link historical knowledge to real geographic locations,
  • explore areas based on personal interests rather than administrative boundaries.

Support the Completion of Bulgaria’s Archaeological Map

Bulgaria is home to thousands of archaeological sites from different historical periods, many of which remain poorly documented or inaccessible to the public.

This campaign supports the completion and further development of an interactive online map of archaeological sites in Bulgaria, created by the Bulgarian Archaeological Association. The map already exists and is publicly available, but requires additional work to expand, verify, and maintain its content.

Funds raised will be used to:

  • add and verify new archaeological sites
  • improve the map’s functionality and user experience
  • enrich site descriptions with historical data
  • ensure long-term maintenance and updates

This project serves researchers, educators, students, and anyone interested in cultural heritage. By supporting it, you contribute to education, transparency, and the preservation of shared European history.

Thank you for helping us make Bulgaria’s archaeological heritage visible and accessible to all.
